About PERCUTANEOUS HEPATIC PERFUSION
Using a specially designed delivery system, Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP) is a way to circulate the chemotherapy directly into the liver.
With this “closed loop” technique, only the liver is exposed to the chemotherapy, protecting other organs. This minimizes the side effects of treatment.
What Can I Expect During Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion?
Using image guidance, our interventional radiologists insert a catheter, with a balloon on either end, through several needle punctures in the skin. Once the catheters are in place, the balloons are inflated to seal off the vein above and below the liver. This isolates the liver for targeted treatment. The blood inside the liver is removed and high-dose, heated chemotherapy is infused throughout the liver on a circuit using charcoal filters to remove chemotherapy from the blood as it is returned to the body.
