About Tunneled peritoneal/pleural catheter insertion

Tunneled peritoneal/pleural catheter insertion is a treatment option for recurrent fluid in the abdomen called ascites.

This fluid can either be drained, or a more permanent catheter (tube) can be inserted for regular draining.

Why is a tunneled peritoneal/pleural catheter placed?

Patients with ascites can have a tunneled peritoneal/pleural catheter placed to relieve belly fullness, pain, and breathing issues associated with ongoing serous fluid buildup. Catheter placement enables daily or every-other-day-drainage of recurrent, with the need for paracentesis.

How is a tunneled peritoneal/pleural catheter used?

The catheter is used with a disposable bottle collection system. A bottle is connected to the catheter. The bottle contains a suction system that helps to gently move the fluid from the body into the tube. A drainage schedule is created so that the patient, caregiver or assistant can assist with drainage. Once the drainage session is completed, a small sterile dressing is applied over the implanted catheter.

What is the benefit of this procedure?

This is a minimal invasive alternative to ongoing paracentesis sessions.
